Find lim x→1 (x² − 1)/(x − 1)

A removable discontinuity — factor and simplify, or sample both sides.

Answer lim x→1 ≈ 2

Solution

  1. Limit lim x→1 of (x^2 - 1) / (x - 1)
  2. x = 0.99999 f(x) = 1.99999
  3. x = 0.9999 f(x) = 1.9999
  4. x = 0.999 f(x) = 1.999
  5. x = 0.99 f(x) = 1.99
  6. x = 0.9 f(x) = 1.9
  7. x = 1.1 f(x) = 2.1
  8. x = 1.01 f(x) = 2.01
  9. x = 1.001 f(x) = 2.001
  10. x = 1.0001 f(x) = 2.0001
  11. x = 1.00001 f(x) = 2.00001
  12. Left side x→1⁻ f(x) → 2
  13. Right side x→1⁺ f(x) → 2
  14. Conclusion Both sides agree → limit ≈ 2
