Solve the right triangle with legs 5 and 12

Find the hypotenuse with the Pythagorean theorem and both acute angles with arctangent.

Answer c = 13, A = 22.6199°, B = 67.3801°, area = 30

Solution

  1. Legs a = 5, b = 12
  2. Hypotenuse c = √(a² + b²) = √(25 + 144) = 13
  3. Angle A A = arctan(a/b) = arctan(0.416667) = 22.6199°
  4. Angle B B = 90° − A = 67.3801°
  5. Area ½·a·b = 30
